How did we start?There is a change in the wind...you can smell it, feel it in the charge of electricity from the mighty thunderheads. South Africa is changing, old regimes have fallen away and the new generations are making it their own. The merging of cultural differences, creeds and religions in the mid 90's caused a storm of emotions, a swirling melting pot like the currents of the Cape point, where the Indian meets the Atlantic. Emerging from this phenomenon are arts and crafts that are absolutely unique. The Art Tribe's ongoing mission is to bring these to the rest of the world - and with it a huge HELLO! from the Rainbow nation.

All of our pieces demonstrate the ingenuity and passion of the artists and craftsmen. Some creations are injected with a wonderful sense of humour, others a keen eye for colour and shape. the Art Tribe invites you to mix the new with the traditional to create the eclectic and vibrant feel that is typical of Africa in your own home.

Modern African Arts and Home AccessoriesOur Bead Beasties, Bead Bikes and Bead Beauty ranges are all produced by small businesses run in and around Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Kwazulu Natal. The sheer ingenuity and resourcefulness of the craftsmen are immediately apparent. Since the pieces are handmade, they are all very slightly different - be it in the order the beads are applied or the way the wire is bent and manipulated. Each cheeky Beastie, speedy Bike or Beauty is made from materials like glass, black plastic bags, aluminium cans, tyre rubber and other unassuming bits and pieces!

We also supply a range of oil paintings and quality table and glassware. We will be expanding our lines in the very near future with the addition of more home products like lamps, cane and wood products and more. On the artistic side look out for bronzes of African wildlife and hand blown African glass!

Traditional ArtIt won't do to forget our roots...as one famous cartoon character said "you gotta put your behind in your past". So we also suppy wood carvings and stone sculpture. On occasion we will be lucky enough to be able to supply Tribal Masks from the various regions of Africa - keep an eye out for these truly exciting pieces, some of which are so intricate and beautifully made they can be described as fine art.

The Artists and CraftsmenWe have great relationships with our suppliers and can carry out commission work if you have an itch for something you don't see on these pages. Rest assured that we engage on a fair footing with our suppliers, with each buying session accompanied by fair and hard negotiation on both sides! We both wish to run successful businesses and we value the long-term relationship over the "quick buck".
