Cape Town makes the World Monopoly board
The game of Monopoly, the world’s most popular board game, recently held a competition whereby people could vote in their city of choice for inclusion on to the first ever international edition of Monopoly. The voting took place over a period of six weeks in early 2008, and the results have just been divulged.
Montreal will represent the most expensive property, and Latvia’s capital Riga follows suite. First on the green property group resides Cape Town, the third most expensive section on the game. More than 5.6 million votes were cast for 70 world-class cities, and Hasbro Inc. Vice president Helen Martin had this to say:
“We hope that fans of the world’s most popular board game will enjoy buying, selling and trading real estate from around the globe in the new MONOPOLY game that they created with their votes.
We are thrilled that the first-ever global game board includes an interesting mix of cities that showcases the dynamic cultures, sights and history of the planet.”
And Cape Town, long considered a cultural mecca, naturalist icon and officially counted as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, will no doubt revel in its recognition on the world’s best selling board game. Monopoly has sold 200 million units since its inception.
