CREME SODA – It’s so smooth!
Every South African knows the benefits of drinking a cold Creme Soda. Aside from the smooth vibes that transcend the throat and cause a burst of green heaven-flavoured tingles, Creme Soda is also known as a hangover-cure (hence Creme SOBER) and a perfect accompaniment to breakfast, lunch or supper. Surprise, surprise though, Creme Soda is available all over the world in many different guises. Read on to discover which countries have it, and why South African Creme Soda remains the best!
North America
- The first Cream Soda made in the States contained whipped egg whites, sugar, lime juice, lemons, citric acid, flavouring, and bicarbonate of soda.
- Canadian cream soda is often pink and has a unique taste somewhat reminiscent of grenadine.
- In the U.S. market, cream soda is often clear or colored light brown and vanilla-flavored, but pink, red, and blue are also relatively common.
- Some cafes in the U.S. make the drink is on location, and consists of soda water, vanilla syrup, and cream or half and half.
- Many of the brands of cream soda marketed in the U. S. contain caffeine.
- The North American market has 20 different types of Cream Soda.
Australia and New Zealand
- In Australia, Cream Soda is generally known as creaming soda (and sometimes creamy soda).
- Cream Soda is usually pink, red or brown, also available in bright yellow.
- The most common manufacturer of creaming soda in Australia is the company Kirks.
- In the 90s, Kirks produced Snow Cap, which was a vanilla flavoured brown version of the drink.
- Cadbury Schweppes Cream is deep red in all states except Victoria where it’s brown.
- In New Zealand it’s sold under the name ‘Foxton’s Fizz’, and is usually opaque white.
United Kingdom
- Cream soda was traditionally served with a dessert-spoonful of vanilla ice cream floating on the top, but this has become a rarity.
- In the UK it is vanilla-flavoured, slightly glutinous and has a soft and long-lasting foam.
- Both A.G. Barr and DG Jamaica manufacture their own brands of cream soda, but most supermarkets sell it under their own names.
Europe
- Italian cream soda is a mixture of carbonated water and half and half (half and half is a type of cream) or full cream combined with vanilla syrup.
- Cream Soda in Europe generally tastes like sweetened or flavoured milk.
- In the Netherlands there is one Cream Soda brand called Frizz and it is caramel-coloured.
Asia
- In Japan, Cream soda is usually an ice cream float made with melon-flavored soda topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- In Hong Kong a yellow variety is marketed under the name ‘Schweppes Cream Soda’
- Singapore sells Cream Soda under the Schweppes name, and some people enjoy Cream Soda in a 1:1 ratio with fresh milk.
- In India there are two brands of Cream Soda: Cottons and Bijoli.
- In Malaysia a brand called F&N makes a clear Ice Cream Soda.
- Elephant Brand Cream Soda is a very popular soft drink in Sri Lanka.
Caribbean
- Cream soda here is a red soda pop, marketed under the name ‘Fanta's Red Cream Soda.’
And finally we get to back to Africa, where the green Creme Soda we know and love exists in fridges, and hearts everywhere. It seems that we’re the only the country in the world to enjoy Creme Soda as it should be, while every other country is bent on making it taste like vanilla and spelling it incorrectly. Go green!
